Halloween honeycomb chocolate brownies

My minis are really getting excited for Halloween this year and are loving all the (not too spooky) decorations and pumpkins that are popping up around our town. We are going to be having our own little Halloween family party so we have been thinking of fun Halloween food ideas that we can serve. We decided that we would make some Halloween chocolate brownies as we all love chocolate brownies, but we wanted to make them with a spooky twist!  We added broken up Crunchie bars, as we like Halloweeny orange coloured honeycomb and finished them off with marshmallow cobwebs!

  • 100g milk chocolate
  • 50g dark chocolate
  • 120mls sunflower oil
  • 215g golden granulated sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 65g self raising flour
  • 60g cocoa powder
  • 2 Cadbury’s Crunchie bars
  • 80g white marshmallows

Before we started, I greased a square tin, and preheated our oven to 180c/gas mark 4.

To make the brownies my minis began by mixing together the sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla extract in a bowl.

Whilst they did the mixing, I melted the chocolate over a pan of hot water on the hob and then added it to their bowl.

We then sifted and added the flour and cocoa powder and my minis gave it another good mix, inspecting it closely to make sure it was all mixed in properly!

I put the Crunchie bars into a zip lock bag and my minis got to work breaking them up into small pieces.  We took out the bigger pieces of Crunchie bar and set them to one side, and shook the smaller pieces/Crunchie bar dust into the brownie mix and stirred it through.

We poured the brownie mix into the tin and then pushed in the larger pieces of Crunchie into the brownie.

We baked the brownies for roughly 35 minutes. Depending on how gooey you like your brownies, you can adjust the time slightly!

Once the brownies were baked and cooled, we decorated them with marshmallow cobwebs. I put a handful of mini marshmallows into a heat proof glass bowl and microwaved them on high for 15 seconds. I left the marshmallows to cool until they were cool enough to handle – please take extreme care – especially with little ones!

We then used our hands to pull and stretch the marshmallows into cobweb-esque patterns over the brownie. My minis really enjoyed this part – they got super sticky and they found it really really funny! I wish I had taken some pictures, but my attention was focused on keeping them safe. We found we had to work quite quickly as once the marshmallows got too cold we couldn’t stretch them as much as we wanted to.

My mini’s were really pleased with their Halloween chocolate brownies and loved the creepy cobweb effect – they tasted great too! I think they would make a great addition to a Halloween party table!
